Getting a permanent residency in Japan is not as hard and as long as it used to be. What used to be a ten-year residency requirement can now be shortened to one year for qualified immigrants to be a permanent resident in Japan.
How to get permanent residency in Japan?
Since 2017, Japan's Ministry of Justice implements new rules in granting permanent residency for immigrants. They introduced a new points-based system that will make it easier and shorter for qualified immigrants to apply for permanent residency. This includes applicants who are either with advanced academic research activities, advanced technical activities or advanced business management activities.
In this new point-based system, each person's academic and work experience corresponds to a number of points. For instance, a bachelor's degree graduate receives 10 points while a master's degree gets 20 points and doctor's degree 30 points. Immigrants with 3 to 4 years of work experience get 5 points while 5 years get 10, 7 years get 15 and 10 years for 20 points.
Current age also has a corresponding point wherein the younger you are corresponds to a higher point. If you are 29 years old and below, you instantly get 15 points. For the complete list of points and qualification, please visit this link.
