One popular dish served in Singapore is the Nasi Padang. It is a combination of steamed rice served with different choices of pre-cooked viands that originated in Indonesia. And if by any chance you are in Geylang, you can try it at Hjh Maimunah. Although you have to be there before lunchtime as the queue can get really long.

Another signature dish in Singapore is the savory noodle Laksa. It's like a ramen but enriched with seafood and coconut milk. The best one we have tasted is in Sungei Road Laksa near Jalan Besar station. It's actually the only food served in this restaurant yet you have to arrive early as many locals love to eat here as soon as it opens.

Now, this restaurant may not serve the best wonton and char siew but its a favorite by many locals because it reminds them of their childhood days. Apparently, the food they serve is just like how it tastes back in the local's school days, particularly their noodle soup with soya sauce and sesame oil.

But if you're really looking for the cheapest meals in Singapore, I recommend trying the hawker centers found in Geylang near Aljunied station. The food served are not Michelin star rated but they are all affordable, cooked like a local and best of all no falling in line required. Some of them are open 24 hours while some operate only from 7 to 8 pm. If you want to check them out, just go to Aljunied station and start walking in any direction and you are likely to find one in the first few corners you pass by.
